No change in the last hour and the two Audis slowed down for a formation finish past the chequered flag. This year’s race will go in down in history as the arrival of the modern diesel performance engine, the nearly silent Audis were the talking point of the weekend and their fuel economy allowed them to run two to three laps longer before refuling meaning that over the course of the 24 hours they spent less time stationary, enhancing their speed advantage.
No change in the top three in LMP1 but Corvette have taken the lead from Aston in GT1. MG still lead LMP2 and GT2 is now lead by Panoz after the number 83 Porche limps into its pit just below us on the main grandstand.
No change in the top four positions Audi, Pescarolo, Audi, Aston. The third place Audi is the fastest car on the track but with an eight lap deficit to the Pescarolo its not looking like an Audi 1-2.
Audi 8 leads the Pescarolo by three laps with the second Audi in third, eight laps down after the Dome retired at six this morning. The 009 Aston leads GT1 but the number 64 Corvette is closing them down.
The first light of dawn is brightening the sky and the leader board holds steady.
In just one lap the number 7 Audi has put the length of the start finish straight between itself and its nearest rival. Meanwhile the number 8 car is in the pits and the mechanics are changing the gearbox. With only two laps in hand over the Pescarolo that’s just pitted the Audi crew have done a superb job in getting it out again with less than half a lap’s time lost.
